[ oxenfrees have no last name on profiles, so the automatic connection can't be made, but they've been in enough spaces together that lambda can make a small guess. ]

If we all died unexpectedly or... we don't remember if we did or not so it's the same as if we did, it's unsurprising people have unfinished business. But it sounds like you want to find a loophole so everyone can win, somehow.

[ he doesn't comment on that, but the expression on his face says yes. he is in fact prioritizing. ]

I don't... [ there's a pause because it's a little more complicated than that. ] I don't know if the loophole's possible, or if it should really be taken. We don't know enough about each other to say one way or another. But I figure it's what other people are going to want, so it can't hurt to start looking early.

[ case in point, he's very well aware it's what alex wants, so. that's what he's thinking about now. ]

[ lambda doesn't care too much about saving everyone. her duty as a servant is to save humankind and the world, but that's not a personal desire. ]

Someone could secretly want to destroy the world once they're revived. [ she's nowhere altruistic enough to think everyone should be saved. ] I think it's better to be selective, but people can play the Game however they want.

That's why I said I don't know if it's a loophole that should really be taken. We don't know enough, and if someone goal really was to destroy the world...you'd think enough people would be less gung-ho about letting them win.

Can I ask what yours are? [ goals. ]

Most people should be against something like that.

[ she knows that much about humankind. morals are something people tend to have. ]

I don't particularly care to lose, and I was under contract to help save the world when I was alive.

[ she doesn't sound excited about the saving the world part, but it's matter-of-fact. ]

[ he's nodding along because that makes sense, but he pauses because of how she phrases it. ]

What do you mean you were under contract? With who? Or, I guess, how?

Through magic. It's a work contract, but you're bound by magic to fulfill it.

[ that's not technically correct, but it's a more understandable way to explain it. ]

Of course it's magic. [ dryly. like yeah, why not, everybody else here is magic apparently so that makes sense. ] And...what about if you don't fulfill it? Saving the world's kind of a big deal?

[ lambda thinks he's either a normie or he has a less than ideal relationship with magic. ]

So. That sounds like a terrible deal. You know that, right? Did you know that was the price before signing? ...well I guess if you don't save the world everybody dies, so maybe that makes a little more sense.

It's not great. [ she isn't full of optimism for this reaper's game for a reason. ] The contract can be dispelled, but it usually takes special circumstances. If the world is doomed, there wouldn't be much of a world to live in.

[ so yeah. he got there in the end. ]

Still. Not sure that's something I could sign on to, so that's...kind of impressive. [ doing it without really wanting to do it, or at least knowing all of the risks of it. ] Here's hoping being here doesn't count as a breach of contract somehow.

I'm not going to worry too much about it, so you shouldn't either. If I'm dead, that's not a breach. It just happens. Don't become too famous, and you'll be fine.

Being famous is pretty much the last thing I'd ever want to do, so I can't say that's going to be a problem. But uh, good to know.

Are you the type that likes to fade into a crowd?

I guess I'm the type that would be totally okay not even being noticed in the crowd in the first place if it meant people wouldn't expect me to be...[ he gestures vaguely, like he doesn't know how to word it. it's code for "i would love if people did not perceive me and expect me to be entertaining and interesting all the time because that's a lot of pressure." ]

But, guess it depends on the crowd, too.

[ lambda doesn't understand because even if she doesn't want to be perceived and doesn't care if she's understood, she does want to be noticed. his gesture is lost on her. ]

I didn't think any type of crowd would be acceptable to you.

[ in terms of being noticed. ]

[ it's complicated. he doesn't want the pressure of having to be likable, but he also wants to be seen as a decent person and be liked and...maybe being noticed isn't right. it's about fitting in, kind of, so he takes her words into account as he mulls over them.]

Maybe it really depends on the people.

The agreeable sort.

[ she is making a guess. she honestly doesn't know what kind of people jonas would find it easiest to be around. ]

The, uh, slightly openminded sort isn't a bad kind either.

[ so the guess isn't too bad, but it's a little more broad, too. ]

[ she can maybe get behind that because she prefers people to have standards.]

I think being too openminded is just as much of a trap as being really closedminded. [ so yeah. only slightly for his own reasons. ] Trying to bother with people who're really closedminded means you're running right into them judging what they've heard about you and not changing their minds. But being too openminded also means there isn't enough accountability for things. People say they'd love for everyone to be open and honest and without judgment about anything, but...leniency means you might not be able to do what you want to do for yourself.

Or. Something like that.

[ he kind of regrets saying any of it as soon as he says it because it's a lot of dumb words, but there we are. ]

No, you're right. Extremes on that scale get you nowhere fast in either direction. Not everything should be accepted. Drawing lines is important. Having your own sense of principles is important, but so is not closing your mind to anyone or anything that doesn't fit into your preconceived notions.

Thinking you have the right judgment from the beginning only makes you more ignorant.

[ dumb words or not, here they both are. lambda can be extreme, and she has high standards about a lot of things, but she gets where jonas is coming from. ]

[ she really does just kind of come out and phrase what he's getting at a lot more succinctly and accurately than he thinks he himself has. which is why there's a little slight grin with that. ]

Yeah, that's it. That's pretty much exactly it. And isn't that the whole point of having an opinion anyway? It can change. [ a shrug. ] All the more reason we have to focus at least a little more on who we're sticking with.

[ you want to pick people that you'll still be able to vibe with even if your opinion changes. ]

But it shouldn't change too easily or too much. We don't need people to be weak-willed. As long as they give you attention in the way you want it.

[ being perceived is scary, but being understood is worth it. ]
