I think even fiction comes from old legends and other stories somewhere. Like how a lot of ideas come from mythology or whatever. Stories of the gods and all that.
Especially since you can never really tell what legends are real and what ones are completely made up. I mean...there's also everything you hear about in other religions, too. Those are probably true to a degree, too. I think I've never been sure where to start when wanting to trace things back.
[ a pat for the reindeer, but... ]
What do you think, Kyoko? Feel like exploring? We can let the reindeer lead the way. [ and we can talk more about this at the same time. i like hearing your thoughts on these things. ]
It'll be fun. Monday is one of the best times to check things out anyway.
[ Let's go walking around the North Pole with the reindeer. ]
Yggdrasil is part of Norse mythology. It's known as the sacred tree that all else revolves around. The branches reach into the heavens and the three roots reach into three other locations.
It may be considered a warden tree. A tree that's venerated for good luck. Occasionally people would make offerings to it. These sorts of trees were around until the late 19th century in places like Scandinavia and Germany. I'm not entirely sure why they fell out of favor. [ Missionaries? ]
[ and so they will get loaded up in the sleigh and let the reindeer pull them around the north pole. jonas will continue to feel extremely cold just thinking about kyoko's lack of a coat. whee. ]
Right, the...world tree. I think I've heard about that before, but I'm not really caught up in how all of it works. [ but he kind of laughs a little at the stray thought. ] It's possible that people wanted something else to believe in besides a tree. Especially with the rise of christianity and everything.
[She seems fine in this weather, but somebody should probably get her into a coat at some point.]
There are a few gods when it comes to Norse mythology. Thor, Odin, Freyr... I haven't looked into them as deeply. I believe Odin is the god of wisdom, poetry and war. An interesting selection to oversee.
[ i'm gonna wrestle her into a coat. me personally. ]
Pretty sure there's a whole comic book hero designed around that, but I've never looked into that either. [ ...hm. ] One of those things isn't like the other though. How do you think gods pick what they're overseeing?
I don't think the gods get to pick. Humans pick and assign them these things as they go on. There could be a particular branch of poetry that Odin was over? Perhaps something regarding what is said before battle?
In some pantheons different gods share an aspect. Ares and Athena are both war gods, for example.
I feel like...that kind of sucks though. Like they're just given this responsibility because other people said so and look to them for these things. What about if Odin had a secret side-hobby he liked that he'd rather be the god of?
But I guess gods would know better. [ ... ] There's probably different parts of the same aspect is why. Right?
[ loaded question...i'd be too worried about fucking it up, whatever it was. ]
Uh...I dunno. I haven't really thought about that either, but maybe...medicine. If there was something I could do to help people. But I don't know if that's how those gods work either. [ thinking... ] I feel like I'd understand Ares more than Athena in this case.
True enough. I think I'd make a pretty bad detective if I had to do it in the real world, so at least one of us knows how to make these things work. Maybe I'd just choose Hermes.
God of boundaries, roads and travelers, thieves, athletes, shepherds, commerce, speed, cunning, and wit. Able to move freely between the land of Gods and mortals and acts as a divine messenger.
[ he looks briefly startled by that thought, if only because jonas is always (still) a little thrown off when people say he could be good at anything. it's something born from years of just trying to get by, thinking of himself (and being thought of) as an idiot slacker with a poor upbringing.
so it takes a moment.
...maybe only for somebody like you who knows how to cut through my bullshit. but thanks. ]
...yeah, him. I've always kinda thought of him as like, you know. The god of the survivors? When he's the god of travel, thievery, money, and wits, he's basically the patron of street smart people.
[What people were is never going to matter to her as much as what people are in the moment. And from everything she's seen of Jonas over the past months, he's a clever teenager with a clear head.
At first, I thought it wasn't a good thing to have him fit me. But now that I'm thinking about it, not all of those things have to be bad. So it could be fine if that was a god I wanted to believe in.

[Gods probably don't really exist except for on some worlds, in which case they can actually pick and choose.]
That's right. Athena is over military strategy and generalship, while Ares embodies the physical valor needed to be successful in a war.

Medicine seems like a good choice. I don't know what I would want. [ Is there a God of balance somewhere? ]

Depends on what you think balance looks like, doesn't it? [ don't just answer people's thoughts out loud. ]

[ A bit more consideration. ]
Dice is the goddess of justice and the spirit of moral order and fair judgement. It feels a bit presumptuous to choose her.
no subject
I don't know if I'd call it presumptuous if it's something you resonate with, Kyoko. It sounds more like being confident in the choice.

As a detective it would be pretty bad if I didn't embody at least some of her traits.
