Almost. [ he could agree with that, and he's eyeing the mimes again with such incredulity he's not sure what to do with them. ] But as long as the coffee's good and they stay over there, I think I'll take my chances. McDonald's finally got too bitter even for me.
[ i'm thinking about how the mimes looked terrible in my head but now the mods made them even worse ]
At least they have an espresso machine. [ there's a wry laugh, and he lifts his own coffee in his hands. ] What do you think? Let's take drinks to go and maybe explore for a while?
I'll take it. But uh...yes. That is definitely a great idea. [ the mimes are starting to loom closer, miming drinking coffee. it means jonas is a little anxiously waiting for the coffee to be made so they can get the fuck out, actually. ]
Have you checked out anything else yet? We could start somewhere we haven't seen yet.
[ fei du is giving these mimes his extremely polite "i find you less interesting that dirt" smile, trying to scare them off from coming near the counter while they wait for jonas's drink. sweet jonas he deserves better. ]
Mm. I've more or less lived at the racetrack - it's by far my favorite place. What about you?
[ AVOID THE MIMES poor jonas will have enough clown college later
god. once the door shuts and they leave mimes who are miming crying at their backs behind, fei du exhales a bit of relief and chuckles, walking very fastly away from this nonsense. ]
The VR place is interesting, isn't it? And I can't say I've been to the theater, but I'd like to.
I like it here, though. [ with a gesture outwards at the city in general. ] It reminds me of home.
[ speedwalking away! from mimes! great idea, best idea. but once they're far enough jonas seems to relax and look around the city again. ]
We can catch a movie later if you want. You'd probably like it if you found the right one. [ but there's an affirmative noise at the idea of the vr place being interesting, and the city being familiar. even if it's a little dark and dreary. ]
This is a lot closer to what I think of when I think of home. I'll admit that. It's still not exactly the same but...it's closer. I can appreciate it a little more.
[ yes this is already better. the horrifying thoughts of mimes are now in the past.
fei du sips at his coffee, smiling a little at the mention of the movie - affectionate. ]
I'd like that. You'll have to show me the ropes - I can't remember the last time I caught a movie.
[ cute. friendship!!! and he nods to the second bit, thoughtful. ] Mm. There's not much pattern to it, is there? Each week feels just different enough I never quite know what to expect. Though, Aika did tell me early on there'd be funny places each time - that cafe must have been one of them.
That long, huh? [ he doesn't seem opposed, almost tentatively at ease with the idea. ] It's been a little while for me, too, before all this but weirdly easy to get back into.
[ it's a joke. but he sips his own coffee and listens, frowning in thought to himself. ]
Ruby was telling me it'd be like this every week, so that doesn't surprise me much either. If there was a pattern, we'd be able to know ahead of time and that probably takes the fun out of it for the game master or whoever is out there.
I'll do my best. [ in all things. ] You think so? I mean...yeah, there were places last week that were better than the week before, and I can't say I'm not happy with some stuff we got this week. But is it improving? Or are we lowering our standards?
It's pretty effective, you know? Make it so we aren't expecting much and the scraps they give us are the highlight of our week. It's a little funny. [ but without thinking, he is already walking toward the theater. ]
Maybe this entire thing is a conditioning exercise.
[ fei du chuckles at the thought, following easily! to the theater. ]
After all, since the very beginning, there's been attempts to tempt us into violent behavior, considering the rules and our Thursdays, like we're mice in Skinner's box. Add in the scraps of a nice meal in a restaurant, or a fun little movie theater... really, it wouldn't be all that surprising. Not only that, but we're starting to fall into something of a routine, here - systemically desensitized to the realities of our Saturdays, even if they're still awful, so we play along. People can be easy to control, for someone in the right sadistic mindset.
[ so casually.... like he is talking about the weather....... ]
It definitely feels that way, sure. So you have to wonder what's the point? And wonder how many of us have fallen into that pattern without even really thinking about it.
It's possibly all three, if you think about it. [ but he sips his coffee in thought. ] We just have to keep everybody vigilant as best as we can. It's the only way we're going to stay on top of things.

[ bleh. ]
...can't say this is a terrible addition though.

Haven't been there yet, but I've been back to the movie theater on and off. And that VR place. That's been weird.
